Afternoon Tea @ Delicious, Straits Quay

Afternoon Tea. The name itself is synonymous with gourmet teas, tiered sandwiches, and of course, scones with a generous serving of the oh so delicious clotted cream. The whole dining experience is reminiscent of one you get at a colonial tea parlour, with the Claire de Lune on repeat in the background. Previously, Penangites were subjected to ridiculously priced afternoon tea sets at the E&O hotel, which I've blogged about previously. It was the closest you get to feeling 'royal', right in little Penang.

You can now get your share of the royal treatment at a place other than the usual hotel coffee houses. Location - Straits Quay, the newest hotspot, or rather 'watering hole' for the who's who in Penang.

The little sister ordered her turkey ham and cheese toastie as she was starving after her school activities.

Even the simple combination of heavenly cheese on toast could make anyone drool. Not forgetting the smell!

Her Melted Chocolate Pot with  Marshmallows. And the verdict: 'The marshmallows are so fluffy I can die!'

And the moment you've all been waiting for...

... Three tiers of yummy goodness!

Four different kinds of finger sandwiches: Smoked salmon with cream cheese (5 stars from me), cucumber, egg mayo and tuna. There were also some duck confit in pastry but I didn't manage to get a shot of them.

Tier two: Lovely scones, paired with cream and jam. They gave us some truffles (the chocolate, not the mushrooms!) as well as some strawberry 'satays', ala fondue with the chocolate dipping sauce on the side.

The savoury cheese biscuits. Interesting taste, but not exactly fantastic in my opinion. I would like my cookies sweet, please.

As for the top tier, you get a choice of any cake on display, so we opted for the latest addition, their white chocolate tart. And boy, were we in for a treat! It was so yummy my sister even wanted to lick the crumbs off the plate. See the picture above? The top's covered in some white chocolate ganache, but below that you get a wonderful layer of banana (yes, bananas!) and caramel filling, waiting to ooze out from the equally amazing pastry shell. Gosh, I am already daydreaming about it now as I type this. I am definitely returning there again to try the rest of their heavenly desserts.

Edit (15/5) : I recently found out that we were served the Banoffee Pie instead of the White Chocolate Tart. Although we did enjoy our banana toffee dessert (to the crumbs!), I'd still give Delicious minus points for getting our order wrong. Tsk tsk.

Delicious, you have certainly met my expectations, what with a name like that! Don't worry, I'll be back soon with more updates on the rest of their delish offerings.

Pang's Hainan Seafood @ Tanjong Tokong

Don't you just love a simple yet tasty Maggi noodle dish?
Drenched in the most delightful brown sauce, this one's a must-order every time we come to Pang's.

Quite a big portion, I must say. Enough for a family of four.
And yes, there are a ton of prawns under the heap.

Next is our veggie dish. Love the crunchiness of the Brussel sprouts here. Addictive. They do it pretty simple, with just a handful of chopped garlic, no sauce. Still turns out great though.

Stir fried lala. Or clams. The spicy sauce wasn't even necessary to fully enjoy the fresh lalas.

And this is what keeps people coming back for more.

The crabs in sweet and sour sauce. Remember, SWEET AND SOUR.
The sauce has got so much kick to it you can't help but slurp it off your fingers.
Yeah, the crabs are not bad themselves either but the highlight is definitely the sauce.
You can even order fried buns (mantou) to scoop up all the leftover sauce from the crabby wreckage.

Just don't mess with Hook.

Edo Ichi III @ Island Plaza

You know the place, right? From here and here. I'll just skip the intro and go straight to the food.

Soup udon. The noodles were good! Really springy and not too starchy. Soup was not too bad either.
I am a sucker for noodles, but this has to be one of the best udon I've tasted.

My udon came with a vegetable tempura side dish.
The crispy layer was not oily at all, trust me. You can't even taste a single hint of oil!
Light as air. Impressed!

Forgot the name of this one. Was one of their specialty rolls. I know this one had slices of unagi (eel) and cheese. My friend couldn't stop raving about this.

And finally, Carol's Japanese pizza. She chose the one with unagi and salmon. And why 'finally'? Cause she waited 30 minutes for it! But the long wait was definitely worth it. Never knew a Japanese pizza could taste so good. Don't be afraid of the red stuff though (my sister was) - it's just fish roe.

Edo Ichi II @ Island Plaza

We just love this place. Came here again when the younger sis was back from Singapore. This time we ordered a little more than before so get ready for another mouthwatering selection of Jap cuisine.

This was what my youngest sis ordered. She's a tad picky with her food and would only eat this if we were having Japanese. She enjoyed this a lot though. Much better than other popular sushi chains. (Hint, hint.)

Now this, everyone likes. Youngest sis, included. That's because of the yummy cheese in the middle. Yes, this delicious Alaska Roll is filled with salmon (cooked), avocado and cheese! The cheese really gives it that something extra. Funny name aside, this was absolutely delish.

SingGAL had the Yaki Udon. This used to be my favourite during my junior college days. She gave this version a try and thought it was great! Mom was a little freaked when she saw the bonito flakes. 'Are they alive???'

Parents ordered the salmon skin salad. Ooh can't you see the crispy salmon skin on top? Everything's always gone in a flash.

I ordered the unagi tofu salad. Again. Trust me, it's so good you'll never see salads the same way again. Big portion, but not too filling to destroy your appetite!

Sorry, but this one's a little blur (too ganchiong to start eating heh) Above was the salmon set my dad ordered. Not bad for the price, you order anything from the ala carte section in the menu and top it up with RM10 to get a full set. No complaints about this one.

And another close up of the salmon. Tried a little bit, exactly how I like my salmon - soft to the bite, with the right amount of teriyaki sauce.

Mom's tempura set. And oh yeah, forgot to mention that the cawanmushi garnered rave reviews from both mom and dad. Besides the usual mushrooms and crabsticks, apparently there were even gingko nuts inside! Yum.

This was not the end, though. Returned there for another round of food with my buddy Carol. Coming up in another post. :)

Edo Ichi Japanese Cuisine

Honestly, I'm not one of those people who go bonkers over Japanese food. I know Penang already has plenty of choices, what with the uncountable number of Japanese joints. There are probably more than 10 in the Pulau Tikus area! Definitely won't be easy to choose.

So when Edo Ichi finally opened in Island Plaza, we were skeptical about going there at first. What if it was just another measly effort to join in on the Jap food craze? Hmm. But then came the dreaded CNY weekend. Where to eat? Most places were fully booked or closed, so we eventually decided on this place. How lucky we were to even get a table!

The service was impeccable, and so was the food. Seriously, I think I may have underestimated the allure of Japanese cuisine. As shown above, we had two salads, the unagi one as well as the salmon skin. Both were satisfying till the last piece of lettuce. Then we had the volcano roll. Which literally looked like one. A volcano, I mean. Salmon and cheese, a match made in heaven. Yum.

Plus, there's always the real fish to look at when you've had enough sashimi.
